Paranormal Activity 2
(2010): Directed by Tod Williams. Starring Brian Boland, Molly Ephram, Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden.

Last year I watched and reviewed Paranormal Activity and fairly enjoyed it. It wasn’t great but I experienced a couple of effective scares and I appreciated a decent, financially successful effort by a first time director. Considering the enormous amount of money raked in by the original, a sequel was inevitable. And so….

Let’s get ready to RUMMMBLLLLLLLLLE!!!

Seriously, why does every “scary” scene begin with a low, ominous rumble? I’d like to see a non-rumbly version of one of these movies to find out if the scares work without them. But anyway…

Horror Movie Marathon: ‘Hobo’, ‘Insidious’, and ‘Devil’

Welcome back to Justin’s Halloween Horror Movie Marathon! Only one week into the event and six movies down. That’s… let’s see… um, one, two… carry the nine… just about a movie a day! Let’s start this batch off with one filmmakers’s first big break…

Hobo With a Shotgun

Hobo With A Shotgun (2011) – Directed by Jason Eisner. Starring Rutger Hauer, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Gregory Smith, Nick Bateman.

Aspiring filmmaker Jason Eisner won the contest with a trailer for a phony movie called Hobo With A Shotgun. As a result of winning, though it doesn’t appear to have been the actual prize, he was able to turn it into a full length feature. And it’s damned fantastic.

I’m guessing that not many of you like to think about Halloween so early in the year. Well, I do. And I happened to be in a Barnes & Noble recently where one of the tables in the children’s area was piled with Halloween books for kids. Oh, you might have rolled your eyes and thought about how frustrating it is that this holiday crap is paraded before us earlier and earlier every year. But it made me happy. I smiled to myself as three words came to mind: Horror Movie Marathon. YES!

Welcome ghosts and ghouls to my Second Annual Horror Movie Marathon. Ahh, horror, that exploration of violence, fear, and death. Where the things that scare us the most are brought to life in the form of ghosts, demons, killers, and other beasts for us to vicariously defeat so that we might grow braver, all from the simple comfort of our chairs! Since we’ve boosted our Internet speed this year I hope that with the aid of Netflix and Hulu I’ll be able to pack in even more terror, blood, and violence into this fantastic event. Here’s three films to get us started!
